The plan saves automatically and exports as a to-scale PDF sheet or as a DWG or DXF file for AutoCAD, Revit or Vectorworks.

MONA CAD is a 2D floor plan editor with a live 3D view, so your space plans sit next to the project, the FF&E schedule and the products you have already sourced.

Who can use MONA CAD?

Everyone with a MONA account. Drawing, editing and exporting plans do not use credits. The one paid action inside the editor is Turn to 3D on a product card, which builds a 3D model of that product from its photo for 10 credits. MONA CAD is built for a mouse or trackpad, so it is not in the phone's bottom bar, though you can still open it from the menu.

How do I start a new floor plan?

  1. Open CAD. Click CAD in the left menu, under Visualize, or go to monaverse.com/cad. To keep the plan with a job, open the project and use its CAD tab instead; plans started there are filed under that project.
  2. Click + New plan. The editor opens on an empty grid. Click the plan name at the top left, type a name, and press Enter.
  3. Pick your units and snap. In the toolbar, set Units to Meters, Centimeters, or Feet / Inches, and Snap to Fine, Normal, Coarse, or Off.
  4. Set the wall defaults. In the right panel under Plan defaults, enter the Wall height and Wall thickness new walls should use.

Already filed a plan in the wrong place? Use the Project menu in the editor header to move it to another project or to No project.

How do I draw walls at exact lengths?

  1. Start a wall. Press W (or click the wall tool on the left rail) and click where the first corner goes.
  2. Type the exact length. Type a number and press Enter, for example 12'6 in feet and inches or 3.5 in meters. Click again to chain the next wall. Walls snap to 15 degree angles; hold Shift while drawing to turn that off.
  3. Finish the outline. Press Esc or double-click. Closed rooms are detected automatically and labeled with their area. Click a room to rename it.
  4. Adjust. Press V for the select tool, then drag a wall endpoint or type exact values for Length, Thickness and Height in the Properties panel. To bend a wall into a curve, enter a value in Curve (bulge).

How do I add doors and windows?

  1. Pick the tool. Press D for a door or N for a window.
  2. Place it. Hover a wall and click. Openings stay attached to their wall when you move it.
  3. Set the details. In Properties, change the door Type (Swing, Double swing, Sliding, Pocket, Bifold, Garage (overhead), or Open frame), the Width, Height, Sill height for windows, and the distance From wall start. Use Flip hinge or Flip swing to turn a door the right way.

How do I add furniture and my own products?

  1. Open the palette. Press F. Your products shows items saved in your Library, the same ones you clip from vendor sites. Basic shapes has generic furniture at standard sizes in Living, Bedroom, Dining & office, Kitchen, Bathroom and Stairs.
  2. Find the piece. Search by name or brand, tap a category chip (Lighting, Rugs, Seating, Beds, Tables, Storage, Bath & kitchen, Decor, Finishes), or change the sort to Recently added, Ready to place first, Name, Brand, or Price. Products from in the editor header narrows the list to one project.
  3. Add it to the room. Hover a ready card, click + Add to room, then click on the plan to drop it.
  4. Rotate it. Press R to turn it 90 degrees or Shift R for 15 degrees. For an accent chair at any angle, drag the round rotate handle on the selected piece, and hold Shift while dragging to step by 15 degrees.

A product card without a 3D model shows Turn to 3D · 10 cr (MONA builds the model from the product photo in about two minutes) or Import 3D when the manufacturer's own model is on record, which is free and true to scale. A card that says Needs dimensions wants width, depth and height added to the product first. Paint and flooring products show Paint walls, Use on walls or Use as floor instead of a placement button.

How do I measure and dimension the plan?

  • Measure (M): click two points to read the distance. It snaps to wall faces, corners, door and window jambs and furniture edges, so you can check true clearances.
  • Dimension (T): click two points to place a permanent dimension line on the plan.
  • Takeoff: the Takeoff button in the header lists flooring, baseboard and paint per room, with a Waste percentage, plus the products on the plan. Click Download spreadsheet to keep it.
  • Elevations: select a wall or a room and click Elevations for dimensioned interior wall elevations as PDF or DXF.

Does my plan save automatically?

Yes. MONA saves your plan about a second and a half after you stop editing. The header shows Saving… and then Saved. If a save fails, a red retry link appears in the same spot; click it to send the plan again. Undo and redo are Cmd Z and Shift Cmd Z.

How do I export or share a floor plan?

Click Export in the editor header and choose:

  • Floor plan PDF, Floor plan JPEG, or Floor plan PNG: a to-scale sheet on your studio's title block for decks, emails and trades. A copy is saved to the project's Files, or to your Library if the plan has no project.
  • Download DWG or Download DXF: an editable drawing for AutoCAD, Revit or Vectorworks, with walls, doors, windows, furniture, dimensions and room names on named layers.

The toolbar also has GLB to download the 3D model and Print to print the plan from your browser.

Can MONA draw the plan for me?

Yes. In Ask MONA, describe the space ("a 12 by 14 bedroom with a closet") or attach a floor plan image, PDF or DWG, and MONA draws it in CAD at scale and sends the link. See How do I turn a 2D floor plan into a 3D model in MONA? for the full walkthrough.

What it does not do (yet)

  • It does not open SketchUp (.skp) or Revit (.rvt) files directly. Use the MONA extension for SketchUp or the add-in for Revit instead.
  • Scanning a room with an iPhone needs the MONA iPhone app, which is not in the App Store yet.

Frequently asked questions

Is MONA CAD included in my plan?

Yes. CAD is open to every MONA account and drawing in it does not use credits. The only credit cost inside the editor is Turn to 3D, which builds a 3D model of a product from its photo for 10 credits.

Can I draw in feet and inches?

Yes. Set Units to Feet / Inches in the toolbar. Bare numbers you type are read in the current unit, so 12'6 means 12 feet 6 inches. Everything is stored at real-world scale, so you can switch units at any time.

Does my floor plan save automatically?

Yes. MONA saves about a second and a half after you stop editing, and the header shows Saving and then Saved. If a save fails, a red retry link appears in the same spot.

Can I get back an earlier version of a plan?

Yes, through Ask MONA. MONA keeps earlier copies of each plan as you edit (at most every 10 minutes, and always before a change that removes most of the plan). Ask it to list the earlier versions of your plan and restore the one you want.

Can I export my MONA floor plan to AutoCAD, Revit or Vectorworks?

Yes. Click Export and choose Download DWG or Download DXF. Walls, doors, windows, furniture, dimensions and room names come through as real CAD entities on named layers, at scale. If a DWG cannot be made at that moment, MONA downloads the same drawing as a DXF and tells you.

Can MONA draw the floor plan for me?

Yes. In Ask MONA, describe the space (for example, a 12 by 14 foot bedroom with a closet) or attach a floor plan image or PDF, and MONA draws it in CAD and sends you the link to open and edit.

How do I put my own products on the plan?

Products saved to your Library appear under Your products in the furniture palette. Use Products from in the editor header to show one project's products or all of them. Products need width, depth and height on record so they are placed at true scale.

Can I see my floor plan in 3D?

Yes. Click 3D View in the toolbar or press Tab. You can orbit the dollhouse, switch to a top view or straight-on side views, walk through at eye height with P, and change wall colors and floors.
