How do I use MONA with Revit?
Install the MONA add-in for Revit 2024 to 2026 on Windows: it syncs your model to a MONA project on save, renders any view inside Revit, and lets MONA change the model from chat.
Quick answer: install the MONA add-in for Revit (Windows, Revit 2024, 2025 or 2026), sign in, and choose the MONA project your model belongs to. Every save then syncs the model, its views, plans, sheets, rooms and furniture onto the project. Render view turns any Revit view into a photorealistic render without leaving Revit, and with Revit open you can tell MONA what to change from any chat and the model changes. See Control Revit from MONA.
The add-in is in beta (version 0.1.0). If you model in SketchUp instead, see Sync, render and control your SketchUp model with MONA.
What the add-in does
- Sync. Your Revit model, as it is right now, lands on the MONA project, so renders, CAD work, schedules and the MONA agent start from the model you already maintain.
- Render inside Revit. One click on the MONA tab turns the active view into a photorealistic render, shown in Revit and placed on a drafting view in the model.
- Change the model from chat. Ask MONA, on your laptop, your phone or by voice, and the open model changes a few seconds later. Each change is one Undo.
Requirements
- Windows. Revit only runs on Windows, so the add-in does too.
- Revit 2024, 2025 or 2026.
- A MONA account on a plan with project access, signed in with your MONA email.
Install the add-in
- Download mona-revit-0.1.0.zip from monaverse.com/downloads and unzip it.
- Right-click
install.ps1and choose Run with PowerShell. It copies the add-in into place for every supported Revit version and unblocks the files Windows marked as downloaded. - Prefer to do it by hand? Copy the
MONA.bundlefolder to%APPDATA%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins(paste that path into the File Explorer address bar to open it). - Close and reopen Revit.
- Revit shows an Unsigned Add-In dialog for MONA, because the beta is not code-signed yet. Choose Always Load.
You now have a MONA tab on the ribbon with Sign in, Choose project, Sync now, Render view, Allow MONA to control this model, Open project in MONA and Open MONA log.
To remove the add-in later, run uninstall.ps1 from the same zip, or delete the MONA.bundle folder and restart Revit.
Sign in and choose a project
- On the MONA tab, click Sign in.
- Enter the email address you use for MONA. We send you a 6-digit code.
- Type the code into the dialog. There is no password to store.
- Click Choose project and pick the MONA project this model belongs to.
The project you pick is saved inside the .rvt file itself, so it travels with the model. Open the same file on another machine and it already knows where it syncs.
Sync your model
Click Sync now, or just save. After every save the add-in syncs automatically a few seconds later. Each sync sends:
- The 3D model. A GLB exported from the default 3D view, with your material colors.
- Your views. An image of every 3D view and floor plan (not templates), up to 12, at 1920 pixels wide. Floor plans can also come across as DWG files.
- Your sheets. All sheets combined into one PDF. Skipped when the model has no sheets.
- Your rooms and levels. Every room with its name, number, level and area.
- Your furniture and fixtures. Every placed furniture, casework, lighting, plumbing, specialty equipment, electrical fixture, generic model, door and window, with its family, type, level, room and parameters such as Manufacturer, Model, Cost, Description, Mark and URL. Up to 5,000 elements per sync.
Everything arrives as ordinary files in your MONA Library, filed on the project. Open the project in MONA and the 3D source: Revit card on the Overview shows the model name, the Revit version, when it last synced, your views as thumbnails, your model files and your sheets. From a view thumbnail, Open in Visualize starts a render from that view.
Fill in Manufacturer, Model and Cost on your furniture families and MONA can answer questions like "what does the living room furniture cost" straight from the model.
Render inside Revit
- Open the view you want and frame it.
- On the MONA tab, click Render view.
The add-in captures the view, MONA studies it and writes the render prompt (the same Photorealize step you get in MONA), then renders it. When it is ready, the render appears in the dialog, with Open in MONA and Save image, and it is also placed inside Revit on a new drafting view named after the view and the time, so it stays with the model. Nothing else in the model changes. Each render uses MONA credits like a render made on monaverse.com.
Control Revit from MONA
With Revit open, the add-in signed in, the model linked to a project and Allow MONA to control this model turned on, MONA can change the model for you. You do not click anything in Revit: you tell MONA what you want, in plain words, and the add-in does it in the open model a few seconds later.
What to say
Open any MONA chat. Tell MONA what to change on the project's 3D source: Revit card opens one already set to the project and starts it with "In the Revit model,". A chat on your phone or a voice conversation works the same way. Name things the way they are named in your model (a family, a type, a view, a level or a category) and say what should happen. For example:
- "Screenshot the 3D view."
- "Move the sofa 24 inches left."
- "Swap the dining chairs to the walnut type."
- "Set the Manufacturer of the pendant to Visual Comfort."
- "Hide furniture in this view."
- "Draw a 12-foot wall on Level 1."
- "Create a room called Primary Bath."
- "Start a new Revit model called Smith Residence."
MONA replies in the chat with what it changed and a screenshot of the result, and the project card lists it under Recent changes. If a name matches more than one thing, or nothing, MONA does not guess: it lists what it found and asks which one you meant.
A new model is saved to Documents\MONA on the Revit machine, opened, and linked to the MONA project you asked from.
What MONA can do in Revit
Take screenshots of any view, set the 3D camera, save a 3D view, show or hide categories in the active view, change materials, place a loaded family type, move or delete elements, set instance and type parameters, list elements, sync, draw walls, floors and rooms, and start a new model. Lengths are in inches unless you say otherwise. That fixed list is all it can do: the add-in never runs code sent from MONA.
Every change is one Undo
Each change runs as a single step in Revit. Press Undo once and the model is back to how it was.
Turn control off
On the MONA tab, turn off Allow MONA to control this model. The project card then shows Connected, control off, and nothing in the model changes until you turn it back on. Syncing and rendering keep working.
Troubleshooting
- Open the log first. Click Open MONA log on the MONA tab, or open
%APPDATA%\MONA\revit.login File Explorer. Every error the add-in hits is written there. Send it to hello@monaverse.com with a note about what you were doing. - No MONA tab after restarting Revit. Check that
%APPDATA%\Autodesk\ApplicationPlugins\MONA.bundleexists, and that you chose Always Load (or Load Once) on the Unsigned Add-In dialog. If you copied the folder by hand, right-click the downloaded zip, choose Properties, tick Unblock, and unzip it again before copying. - PowerShell will not run install.ps1. Your IT policy may block scripts. Copy
MONA.bundleby hand as described above. - On a Mac. The add-in is Windows only, because Revit is.
- MONA says Revit is offline. Revit must be open, with the model linked and the add-in signed in. Changes asked for while Revit is closed wait 10 minutes, then expire; ask again once the model is open.
- Connected, control off. Turn on Allow MONA to control this model on the MONA tab.
- Signed out. Click Sign in again. A fresh 6-digit code fixes an expired sign-in.
- No project chosen. Use Choose project first. A model that is not linked to a project will not sync.
Frequently asked questions
Does the MONA add-in work on a Mac? No. Revit only runs on Windows, so the add-in is Windows only. It supports Revit 2024, 2025 and 2026. On a Mac, use the MONA extension for SketchUp or export views from Revit by hand.
Why does Revit say Unsigned Add-In? The add-in is in beta and is not signed with a code-signing certificate yet. Choose Always Load and Revit stops asking. Choosing Load Once works too, but Revit asks again at the next start.
Can MONA change my Revit model? Yes, while the model is open in Revit with the add-in signed in and Allow MONA to control this model turned on. Tell MONA what to change from any chat. Each change is one Undo step in Revit.
What happens if Revit is closed when I ask MONA for a change? MONA queues it. If the model opens with the add-in signed in within 10 minutes, the change runs then. Otherwise it expires and nothing happens to the model.
Can MONA run any code inside Revit? No. MONA can only ask the add-in for a fixed list of actions, such as screenshot, move, delete, set parameters, hide categories, draw a wall, floor or room, and start a new model. The add-in never runs code sent from MONA.
Does the add-in upload my .rvt file? No. It exports from the open model and uploads the exports: a 3D model, images of your 3D views and plans, your sheets as one PDF, and a data file with levels, rooms and furniture. Your .rvt stays where it is.
Which furniture data does MONA read from Revit? Every placed furniture, casework, lighting, plumbing, specialty equipment, electrical fixture, generic model, door and window, with its family, type, level, room and parameters such as Manufacturer, Model, Cost, Description, Mark and URL. Up to 5,000 elements per sync.
Where do I find the log if something goes wrong?
Click Open MONA log on the MONA tab, or open %APPDATA%\MONA\revit.log in File Explorer. Send it to hello@monaverse.com with a note about what you were doing.
