MONA

Can MONA read the dimensions and scale of my floor plan?

Yes, from the dimension labels printed on the plan. MONA reads measurements from annotation text, never guesses from pixels, and tells you if a plan has no legible dimensions.

Yes, as long as the plan has dimension labels on it. MONA reads measurements from the annotation text on your plan, the dimension chains like 13'-1", room callouts, and schedules, and uses them to reconstruct the space to scale. It never estimates real-world size from pixel measurements, because that is how silent scale errors happen.

How the reading works

  1. Upload the plan (PNG, JPG, HEIC, or PDF; a dimensioned plan reads best).
  2. MONA reads every legible dimension from the printed text and reconstructs the rooms. This usually takes under a minute.
  3. You get a confirmation screen showing what MONA understood before anything else happens. If a wall length or a room is off, correct it there. Your correction is saved.

For walls that are not individually labeled, MONA can estimate their length proportionally from dimensions it did read, and it tracks which measurements came from the drawing versus which were estimated, so nothing silently pretends to be measured.

What if my plan has no measurements?

MONA will tell you rather than guess. A plan with no legible dimension text is declined with a clear message that MONA needs labeled dimensions to build the room to scale. The fix is quick: add even a few key dimensions to the plan, or re-export it from your design tool with the dimension layer visible.

The same honesty applies to photos of rooms and unlabeled hand sketches: MONA asks for a dimensioned plan instead of inventing a scale.

Tips for a clean read

  • Export at a size where the dimension text is crisp. If you can read it comfortably, MONA can.
  • Keep the dimension layer on when exporting from CAD tools.
  • L-shaped rooms and multi-room plans are supported.
  • iPhone photos of a printed plan work (HEIC is handled automatically), just make sure the labels are sharp and not skewed.

Frequently asked questions

Does MONA guess dimensions from the drawing's proportions? Only for unlabeled walls, and only relative to dimensions it actually read from the text, with the estimate tracked as an estimate. If nothing is labeled, it declines rather than guesses.

A client caught a wrong dimension once with another tool. How does MONA prevent that? Two ways: measurements come only from your plan's printed labels, and you review a confirmation screen of what was read before the model is used. You stay the source of truth.

What formats can I upload? PNG, JPG, HEIC, and PDF, including exports from SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, and Chief Architect.
